Wordless Wednesday #18: Holm Oaks (Quercus Ilex) - Bosco Sacra (Sacred Woods), Monte Luco, nr. Spoleto, Italy

Manipulated photos of the evergreen holly oak (Quercus Ilex), native to the Mediterranean Region, found on Monte Luco.  These woods are magnificent and have been venerated since early Roman times, most notably to the Roman God Jupiter.  More recently, Francis of Assisi and his brothers would go into these woods for periods of solitude.
